TS-ICET 2016 - Analysis
TS-ICET 2016 was held on 19th May 2016.
TS-ICET is the Telangana State Integrated Common Entrance Test (TS-ICET) for admission into M.B.A. and M.C.A. courses of all the Universities in Telangana State and their affiliated colleges.
This test was conducted by Kakatiya University, Warangal on behalf of Telangana State Council of Higher Education, Hyderabad.
There was no change in the question paper pattern and the marking scheme as compared to TS ICET 2015. The question paper consisted of 200 questions to be answered in 150 minutes. There were three sections - Analytical Ability consisting of 75 questions, Mathematics section which had 75 questions and a section on Communication Ability with 50 questions. There was no negative marking. To help you understand this year’s test paper better, we provide you with a comprehensive analysis and solutions, below.

Section A – Analytical Ability
Data Sufficiency:
Questions from topics of Numbers and Plane Geometry dominated this section. This year there were 12 questions from these two topics. Numbers, as such is an important topic under this test are. Other questions were from Mensuration, Polynomials, Averages, Matrices, Ratio and Trigonometry. There was no reasoning based question in this section.
On the whole, the data sufficiency part can be rated as difficult, with difficulty level of 2/3rd of the questions being moderate to difficult.

Data Analysis:
This part had two DI sets – one with five questions based on data given in a table and another set with 5 questions on a pie chart. The questions under both the sets wre easy. Some questions could be answered just by observation. Over all this was a scoring section !!
Reasoning: (Problem Solving, Coding-Decoding and Date, Time and Arrangement)
There were 45 Reasoning questions (including one question on Progressions) from the test area of Problem Solving.
-
Continuing the pattern that was followed in last few ICETs, this year also there were 20 questions based on series and analogies. About 85% of questions were on Series. There were five odd man out questions.
- The questions on 'Coding – Decoding' have been split into two parts - One set of five questions based on logic of [ (3n+2) / 26 ] and another set of five individual questions. The set of five questions was easy.
- The questions on Clocks & Calendar, Arrival & Departure, Blood Relations, Symbols & Notations, seating arrangement were of easy-moderate difficulty level.
Overall, this section was easy. A score in the band of 35-38 out of 45 is a real good score in reasoning !!

Section B –Mathematical Ability
This section was difficult and time consuming. More than 2/3rd of the questions in this section were either moderate or difficult.
While there were few questions which could be solved by direct substitution using the formulae, there were lot of questions which were purely based on the application of the concepts rather that direct substitution in the formulae types.
Over all, the section on Mathematical Ability in TS-ICET2016 was difficult.

Some discrepancies were observed in a few questions.
1. In the question on probability ( Total of 17 on throw of 3 dice), the correct answer is 1 / 72, which is not present in choices.
2. In the question on rank correlation, if the given data is considered and ranks assigned to them, the answer that we get ( 11/35) is not present in choices.
3. In another question on denominations of coins, the number of 50 p coins come out to be a non – integer !
Section – C -Communication Ability
A brief analysis of each area of the English component is given below.
Vocabulary
As usual, there were six stand alone questions in this part; however, some of the head words were not very simple and would have required a bit of focused attention to answer. At least two words were not very commonly used ones. A diligent student can achieve a score of three – four out of six. There were four fill in the blank sentences that were uncomplicated; most of the choices were easy picks. It would have been easy to arrive at the correct answer by elimination of those words which were blatantly irrelevant to the idea / context in the sentence.
Functional Grammar
Following the 2015 pattern, there were 15 questions in all in this area, out of which seven were questions on Statements/Conversations and eight were on filling the blanks with suitable verb/phrase/preposition. Common knowledge of the usage of prepositions and phrasal verbs would have made this part a cakewalk. The difficulty level can be pegged between easy and moderate. Probably two questions that might have put a student in a fix were one questions on conversations and one question based on statements where the tone of the speaker had to be identified.
Reading comprehension
There were three passages with a total of fifteen questions, with five questions per passage. The passages were all easy to read and uncomplicated in presentation. They were of about 200-250 words.
The first passage was a descriptive one in which the sights and sounds of a particular place were vividly described . The passage was very simple and the questions were all direct
The next passage was a narrative. Here the author described the feelings that he nurtured and the experiences that he had during the course of his childhood and adolescence. This passage also had very direct questions.
The third passage was about the various stages which one goes through during the process of assimilating a new culture . The questions based on this passage were quite challenging and would have posed some difficulty for students
Overall, it can be called a moderate section.
Computer and Business Terminology:
Now coming to the questions on computer and business terminology - these are also a part of the Communication Ability section. The questions on Business Terminology can be categorised as easy. Out of the 5 questions, 4 were direct. The question on “Organisation involvement with in a company” was slightly tricky ! The questions on Computer Terminology can be categorised as easy. All the questions on computers were direct and simple !
Overall, TS-ICET2016 paper will be a low scoring paper because of the higher difficulty level of Mathematical Ability section and questions on Data Sufficiency. The English section and the Reasoning section were relatively much easier when compared to the section on Mathematical Ability.
