TANCET 2015 was conducted on 16thMay, 2015 from 2: 30 p.m. to 4 : 30 p.m. Anna University has been conducting this exam on behalf of the Government of Tamilnadu. For the last few years it was conducted in month of March but this year it was conducted in May.

Exam Snapshot

Number of Questions 100
Number of Sections 5
Marking Scheme 1 Mark for every correct answer
Negative Marking 1/3 Mark for every wrong answer
Number of Choices 4
Duration 120 Minutes

As expected, this year also there were surprises in the TANCET exam. But this time, the surprises favoured the test takers. Sections like ABS (Analysis of Business Situations),Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency, Reading Comprehension were on the easier side. The section ABS was back to the original variety i.e identifying the given point as a major assumption, major objective, etc. Last year most of the test takers struggled to answer this part of the test, as large amount of time was needed for understanding the directions. The questions given in the sections Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency were simple and straight forward. The passages in the Reading Comprehension(RC) section were simpler when compared to those given in the last few years.

Regarding the number of answer options, the TANCET 2015 paper had four choices instead of the regular five choices. Since it was already mentioned in the prospectus that there would be four choices in the TANCET MBA exam, students were not caught unawares. Let us now examine each section individually.

Reading Comprehension, Analysis of Business Situations and Grammar

RC- 20 questions
ABS - 20 questions
Grammar - 20 questions
Total - 60 questions

Till 2012, two sets of passages with ten questions per passage were given in both the ABS and RC sections. In 2013, though there were only two passages in the ABS section, the number of questions in the first ABS passage was 20 and the number of questions in the second passage was 10. In 2014, there was only one passage each in ABS and RC sections. From this trend, it is evident that TANCET is an exam that continues to surprise the aspirants by way of the composition of questions or by way of testing.

The ABS Section in TANCET 2015 was a relief to the test taker as the way in which the questions were asked was easy. Unlike TANCET 2014, where a test taker had to identify whether the point mentioned at the end of the paragraph was an investment decision, involves risk, etc., this time the test taker had to identify only whether the given point is an assumption, objective, factor, etc. There were two passges with ten questions each. The first passage, "The success of xcel corporation in the investment conscious country.." was a wee bit lengthy but a student who had prepared well with T.I.M.E.'s ABS practice exercise papers would have found it simple. Same is the case with the other passage on Mr. Edward Com and Mr.Ratan Dass.

In the Reading Comprehension section, unlike last year this time four passages were given with the first, second, third and fourth passages having 5, 6, 4 and 5 questions respectively. The questions focussed on the central theme, inferences etc.

Questions on Grammar were of easy to moderate difficulty level. The questions tested the following aspects of grammar - tenses, punctuation, verbs, adverbs, uncountable nouns, phrasal verbs, etc. A major portion of the questions were simple and easy.

On the whole, we can classify the sections - RC,ABS and Gramamr as moderately difficult. A score of 42+ marks can be considered very good.

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Sufficiency

QA - 20 q
DS - 20 q
Total - 40 q

Quantitative Aptitude part of TANCET 2015 can be considered as the easiest of all the TANCETs conducted over the last nine to ten years. Last year, the test takers faced a difficult situation, since the section focussed on 10+2 level questions instead of the routine arithmetic based questions. Though there were occassions where 10 + 2 level maths questions were given in the earlier TANCET Exams, the focus was very low. This year the questions given on Quantitative Aptitude were from the following areas:

Area Number of Questions Difficulty Level
Numbers 9 Easy - Moderate
Simple Equations 2 Easy
Ratio - Proportion 1 Easy
Percentages 2 Easy
Compound Interest 2 Moderate
Geometry & Mensuration 2 Easy - Moderate
Miscellaneous 2 Easy - Moderate

Data Sufficiency part of TANCET 2015 paper had a good mix of easy to moderate level questions. There were questions from the areas like Equations, Ratio-Proportion, Percentages, Time & Distance, Mensuration etc. Apart from these there were questions from reasoning areas like arrangements, calendars, etc. Though there were some time consuming questions, still a majority of the questions could be answered by spending total time of 30-35 minutes.

A score of around 32 + can be considered very good.
