IPM-AT 2017 Analysis

IIM Indore conducted the IPM-AT on 16th May, 2017 across various centres in the country. The test was a computer based test and had a total of 100 questions. There were two sections – Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability with 60 and 40 questions respectively. Each question carried 4 marks and there was a negative marking of 1 mark for each of the wrong responses. Test-takers were expected to show their competency in both the subject areas. The total duration of the test was 120 minutes – 75 minutes for QA and 45 minutes for VA.

The paper carried the same challenges as it had over the past years - difficult and lengthy questions.

Let us now have a look at the individual sections:

Section 1: Quantitative Ability

As has been for a few years now,the Quantitative Ability section proved to be yet again a difficult one as compared to the Verbal Ability section. A significant number of questions were present from Numbers, Algebra, Pure Maths, and a few from Arithmetic as well. The questions were majorly from the topics like Geometry, Mensuration, Probability, P&C, Progressions, Matrices, Functions, and Complex Numbers. There were few questions from the topics like Time & Work, SI/CI, PPL. A couple of caselets were also there on data Interpretation which involved some calculations. About 47 questions were MCQs out of which about three questions had more than one choices correct. There was no negative marking for these three questions. 13 questions were non-MCQ in nature. The difficulty of the section was primarily attributable to complexity of a few questions as well as paucity of time. Around 35-40 should be considered a good attempt in the section.

Section 2: Verbal Ability

There were no surprises in the Verbal Ability section this year, as the pattern was similar to that of previous years. The section was easy and all the questions could have been attempted in the stipulated amount of time.

Following is the broad structure of this section:

There were two RCs with 12 questions each. One passage was based on ‘Social media’ and the other one was on ‘Human life and nature’. About three questions were based on Critical Reasoning, four questions on Grammar/FIBs, two questions on Verbal Analogies, three questions on para jumbles, four questions on identifying the wrong usage of a word in the given sentences.

Around 34-36 should be considered a good attempt in the section.

Overall Verdict

A net attempt of 65-70 can be considered as a good shot!
