Brief history

  • Larsen & Toubro Limited is the biggest legacy of two Danish Engineers, who built a world-class organization that is professionally managed and a leader in India 's engineering and construction industry. It was the business of cement that brought the young Mr.Henning Holck-Larsen and Mr.S.K. Toubro into India . They arrived on Indian shores as representatives of the Danish engineering firm F L Smidth & Co in connection with the merger of cement companies that later grouped into the Associated Cement Companies.

  • Together, Mr. Holck-Larsen and Mr. Toubro , founded the partnership firm of L&T in 1938, which was converted into a limited company on February 7, 1946 . Today, this has metamorphosed into one of India 's biggest success stories. The company has grown from humble origins to a large conglomerate spanning engineering and construction.

  • Engineering and construction division constitutes the largest business segment of the company providing premier services in the areas of process technology, basic and detailed engineering, heavy engineering and skid mounted modular fabrication, procurement, logistics, construction, erection, commissioning and project management. Engineering and construction division executes projects on turnkey basis.

  • Engineering and construction division serves the core sectors and infrastructure of the economy viz. oil exploration & refinery, sulfur recovery units, diesel hydrotreaters, hydro power, fertilizer, petrochemical, steel, cement, mining, aerospace, nuclear power, roads, ports, bridges, telecommunication, food and pharmaceuticals.

    • HEAVY ENGINEERING DIVISION

  • Heavy Engineering Division is organised under self-reliant Strategic Business Units (SBUs) catering to the needs of core sector industries through supply of equipment to Process Plant Industries and Defence, Nuclear Power & Aerospace Sectors. The division operates at the upper end of the technology spectrum and has been at the forefront of introducing new processes, products and materials into manufacturing sector for over six decades. Heavy Engineering Division has the state of the art manufacturing facilities which are capable of meeting the challenges of technology, quality conformance & delivery, while ensuring cost competitiveness. HED's manufacturing units are located at Powai(Mumbai),Hazira(Surat ) and Ranoli(Near Vadodara)
