Section 1: Verbal and Logical Ability

Section 1: Verbal and Logical Reasoning

The Verbal and Logical Ability section was an analytical experience with uncertain results. The grammar questions were easy enough. Vocabulary-based questions took the form of paragraph completion with three and four blanks – difficult and easy. Five-sentence paragraph jumbles erred on the difficult side. Critical Reasoning questions were all conclusion-based, with moderate results. Two poems with one and two questions each were contemplative. Reading Comprehension passages produced no easy results either – topics being as varied as Psychological richness, Arendt's public consciousness, Bullshit, and Stupidity. Questions were largely inference and application based.

The breakup of the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension segments is as below:

A) VERBAL ABILITY

AreaNo. of questionsDifficulty Level
Identifying Grammatically incorrect sentences (one being preposition-based)3Easy
Fill in the Blanks (3/4 blanks to be filled in a very short paragraph)2Easy/Difficult
Paragraph Jumble (5-sentence para jumbles on Education and Coding)2Difficult
Critical Reasoning (4 questions on Geology, Swiss Cheese theory, Labour-work, Social Conditioning)4Moderate

The Verbal Ability segment had a total of 11 questions

Of the four Critical Reasoning questions, three could be attempted with some assurances of being right.

Both the Paragraph Jumble questions were difficult due to lack of continuity.

Error Identification grammar questions could be easily figured out by working with the given choices.

Paragraph completion questions were uncertain (technology - 3 blanks) and easy (accountability - 4 blanks)

B) Reading Comprehension

There were four RC passages, with three questions each, and two poems with one/two questions.

AreaNo. of questionsDifficulty Level
Poem on 'Smile in the Library' - Inference question 1Moderate
Poem on 'Voice/Legs' - Theme and Meaning 2Difficult
RC Passage on 'Hedonic/Eudaimonic' - Contrast/Define/Conclusion3Moderate
RC Passage on 'Arendt - Behaviour/Public responsibility' - Categorize/Describe/Reason3Difficult
RC Passage on "Bullshit" - Inference/Reason/Application3Difficult
RC Passage on "Stupidity" - Summary/Explain/Application3Moderate

The first poem was on familiar lines. The second poem posed questions cryptic to both poet and reader. All passages were topical and urgent, invoking a larger sense of realisation to look beyond tradition/beyond expectation/beyond the image. The questions, however, seemed not to produce answers in a definitive sense, even after contextual reading. Some RC answer choices appeared to be expedient and could be eliminated easily. Hence, finally it's a gamble between two or three choices. But certainly, the results would be better than expected.
