TISS NET 2020 Analysis

I) TISS NET (TISS NATIONAL ENTRANCE TEST)

TISS-NET is a common screening test for all full time Masters Programmes across all the TISS campuses (Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad)and centres. TISS-NET is aimed at short-listing candidates for Stage 2 based on differential cut-offs for different programmes depending on the number of seats, number of applicants and the scores secured by the candidates.

THE SCORE FOR TISS-NET WILL BE USED ONLY TO SHORTLIST THE CANDIDATES TO BE CALLED IN FOR STAGE 2. THE SCORE WILL NOT BE ADDED TO THE FINAL SCORE FOR SELECTION

TISS NET 2020 was held successfully on Saturday, Jan 4th 2020 in 40 cities between 2.00 pm and 3.40 pm. The test was an online Computer Based Test. There were no surprises in terms of the overall structure of TISS NET this year.

Features of TISS NET

  • Number of sections - 3
  • Total Number of questions - 100
  • Total Number of marks - 100
  • Time duration - 100 min
  • No sectional time limits and sectional cut offs
  • No negative marks
  • Each questions had four options.

A break up of the three sections is given in the table below:

SECTION NUMBER SECTION NAME No. of questions No. of marks
1 English Proficiency 30 30
2 Mathematical & Logical Reasoning 30 30
3 General Awareness 40 40

With no sectional cut-offs expected, it was advisable for the students to maximise their overall score. There was no negative marking, so ideally a candidate should have attempted all questions by judiciously working with the options.

The overall difficulty level of the exam was marginally lower than last year’s test mainly due to an easier Verbal section and a slightly easier Quant section.

A detailed analysis of the three sections is given below:

Section I - English Proficiency

This section comprised 30 questions, out of which there were 10 questions on Reading Comprehension and 20 questions on Verbal Ability and Vocabulary.

Reading Comprehension:

The RC area had two passages with a total of 10 questions out of which 5 were easy and 5 were of medium difficult. Most of the questions were inference based.

RC Passage 1: The topic was: Rapid Eye Movement Patterns during sleep observed in humans and animals

RC Passage 2: European colonization and their impact on health of Aborigines and Native Indians

Verbal Ability and Vocabulary:

The 20 questions in the VA/ Vocab/ Grammar areas were of moderate difficulty level.

The complete analysis of the English Proficiency section is provided below:

Areas No.of Questions Difficulty Level
RC Passage 1 5 4 Easy, 1 Moderate
RC Passage 2 5 3 Easy, 2 Moderate
Fill in the blanks 3 3 Easy
Para completion (Cloze Test) 4 2 Easy, 2 Moderate
Error spotting 2 2 Easy
Correct sentence 1 1 Moderate
Synonym 2 2 Easy
Antonym 2 2 Easy
Odd Word Out (Synonym based) 1 Easy
Parajumbles 2 Moderate
Critical reasoning 1 Moderate
Logical Reasoning (Simple Arrangement of books) 1 Easy
Logical Reasoning (Data Sufficiency) 1 Moderate

A good strategy would be to devote 40 minutes to this section.

A good score for this section would be 25 marks.

Section II - Mathematical & Logical Reasoning

The section was easy in terms of difficulty level. It had a total of 30 questions. Almost all the questions were manageable. There were two Data Interpretation sets with a total of 7 questions. The first set involved a Pie chart with 3 questions and the second set was a Table with 4 questions The remaining 23 questions were quant-based questions. Since the quant questions were relatively easy, they should have been attempted first, in the order that they appeared. All Numbers and Arithmetic based questions should have definitely been attempted seriously.

The following table outlines the topic-wise break-up of the Quant questions in this section. Quant based questions directly tested conceptual knowledge. Most of the questions were formula based.

Area No.of Questions Difficulty Level
Numbers (HCF, LCM) 1 Easy
Arithmetic, Geometric, Harmonic mean 1 Easy
Compound Interest 1 Moderate
Ratio and Proportion 3 Easy
Time, speed, distance 2 Easy
Time and Work 2 Easy
Geometry and Mensuration 6 4 Easy and 2 Medium
Logarithm 1 Moderate
Algebra (Sequences and series, polynomials etc) 5 4 Easy and 1 Medium
Miscellaneous 1 1 Easy

The following table outlines the topic-wise break-up of the Data Interpretation questions in this section.

Area No.of Questions Level of difficulty
Set 1: Pie chart (Market share of 4 companies A, B, C, D) 3 Easy
Set 2: Table (Growth rate of GDP of states) 4 2 Easy, 2 Moderate

The ideal time allocation for this section would be 35 to 38 min.

An attempt of at least 26 questions would be considered good.

Section III - General Awareness

This section comprised 40 questions, each carrying 1 mark. About 20 questions were easy, 12 were medium and about 8 were difficult.

A score of 20-23 would be a good benchmark. Attempting all GA questions would not have taken more than 20 minutes.

Some of the GA questions are given below:

1) Who is the chairman of the Human Rights Council?

2) What is the number of Red Balls on a snooker table?

3) Where is the Kaleshwaram project?

4) Which of the following is an endangered animal?

The TISS NET score should be available in a month’s time i.e. by 4th February 2020

The Personal Interview round will take place between 11th to 21st March 2020.

Note that the TISS NET score is just used to shortlist candidates and does not play a role in subsequent admission rounds.

We, at T.I.M.E. propose the TISSNET 2020 cut-offs for the short-listing of candidates for 2nd stage for the M.A. (HRM) - Mumbai campus, General Category to be 76.
