B-School Profile of Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon

The Management Development Institute (MDI) was established in 1973 as an Indian business school. It was set up in Gurgaon, in collaboration with several international institutions like the World Bank, UNDP, UNIDO and ILO and the Industrial Finance Corporation of India. Another campus has since been established near Murshidabad, West Bengal, in 2014. 

It has been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and is India's first business school to receive this prestigious accreditation. MDI was also accredited by the South Asian Quality Systems (SAQS) in 2005. AMBA, UK has also accredited it for its long-term education programmes.

History of the institution

In 1973, MDI was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, at New Delhi. Its objective was to establish an institute to train students, and to offer consulting and research opportunities.  Dr. T. N. Kapoor was the first Executive Director to be appointed in 1984. In 1994, MDI started its Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM).

Eligibility: For all post-graduate programs in MDI, CAT scores are accepted for Indian students while foreign students will have to submit their GMAT scores.

Of these three courses, PGPM is the institute's flagship program and was the first course to be accredited by AMBA.  When it began in 1994, this two-year program had an intake of 240 students, while the PGP-HRM and PGP-IM take in 60 students each.

These programs have been designed so that they are in keeping with the demands of industry so that students leaving the portals of MDI turn into professional managers and achieve those levels of excellence that they expect to reach. 

Faculty members teach the course using various methodologies, but chiefly, lectures, seminars, group discussions, role plays, live projects, case studies, field visits, etc. Industry professionals help revise the curriculum so that it reflects the need of the hour. 

  1. Eligibility for PGPM/PGP-HRM/PGP–IM: Students applying for the above courses must have a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in Classes X and XII. He or she must also have a minimum of three years' Bachelor's degree with 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in any discipline from a recognized Indian university. Those candidates appearing for the final year examination of the Bachelor's degree or equivalent examination and who meet all the requirements of the Bachelor’s degree by June 30th 2018, may also apply. 

Selection procedure: Students are shortlisted based on their performance in the CAT, including cut-offs per each section. Shortlisted candidates are called for a round of Group Discussion, Written Analysis Test and Personal Interviews.

Selection criteria for PGP: Based on candidates' performance in the CAT exam, they are shortlisted for the rounds of Writing Analysis Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).

Shortlisted candidates will go through the next rounds of:

  1. Written Analysis Test (WAT): They will be asked to write an analysis on a topic provided. They will be scored on language and content. 
  2. Group Discussion (GD): The topic given for WAT will be the subject for discussion here. How students behave during this period and the content they come up with are the bases of their evaluation in this round. 
  3. Personal Interview (PI): This is the last round of the selection process. Here, they are judged on their business knowledge, communication abilities, analytical abilities and general aptitude. 

The final merit list is a collation of each student's CAT scores, application score and WAT-GD-PI score.

  1. Eligibility for NMP/PGP–EM: Here too, candidates should have a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in Classes X and XII. He or she must have a three years' Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in any discipline from any Indian university or he must have an equivalent qualification that the Indian Union Ministry of Human Resources Development recognizes. He should have completed a minimum of five years executive work after graduation as on December 31. Sponsored candidates must necessarily take the MDI Admission Test.

Selection procedure: If students have minimum marks of 50% in Classes X and XII exams or equivalent CGPA, they are eligible for these programs. He or she must also have secured a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA at the bachelor's degree level from any recognized university in India. He or she should also have five years' executive work experience, as on December 31. If candidates are sponsored, they must necessarily take the MDI Admission Test.

Selection criteria for NMP/PGP–EM: Based on their CAT, GMAT or MDI scores, candidates will be shortlisted for the next round. For sponsored candidates, taking the MDI Admission Test is mandatory. After the test, shortlisted candidates will be invited for a Personal Interview round. Based on the candidate's performance, the final selection will be made. 

  1. Eligibility for PGP–PPM: Candidates eligible for this program comprise officers from All India Services and Class I Service officers from Central and State Governments, who are sponsored by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Govt. of India.

DoPT-sponsored candidates wishing to apply for this program should comply with the following requirements:

  • He or she should not be more than 50 years of age when the program begins (53 years if SC/ST).
  • Officers of All India Services and Central Services should have a work profile of a minimum of seven years in Group A service. State Civil Service Officers should have worked for at least nine years in Group “A” service.
  • He or she should not have undergone any training for 12 weeks or more during a five-year work period before the date of the start of this program. If abroad, he or she should not have undergone training of more than two weeks in the preceding two years, or more than a month in the preceding three years or more than six months in the last five years. 

Selection procedure: Candidates will be asked to take a written test, conducted by the institute. Shortlisted candidates are then asked to appear for a Personal Interview.

Tuition fees:  The tuition fees for each of the programs described above are given below:

  1. Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM): Rs. 19,80,720 for two years
  2. Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management (PGP-HRM): 1,980,720 for two years
  3. Post Graduate Program in International Management (PGP-IM): 1.980,720 for two years
  4. Post Graduate Programme in Energy Management (PGPEM): 1,517,000 for one year

Facilities provided

Campus: About 12 km from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, is situated the campus of MDI in serene and picturesque environs. It is just the right environment for students to learn peacefully and introspect. Its campus is spread over 150,000 sq metres in Gurugram. It is designed to have red brick buildings and it has several trees all over the campus. The buildings have been named uniquely, such as Gurukul, Lakshaya, Scholars, Renaissance, Parthenon, etc. 

All the campus blocks such as the lecture halls, administrative blocks, faculty blocks, syndicate rooms computer centre and library are air-conditioned. Residential accommodation for administrative and academic staff is available here. 

The institute also has a library and computer centre and fully furnished residences for executives, with recreation facilities such as a golf course and flood-lit tennis, badminton and basketball courts. 

Class rooms: Each classroom is air-conditioned and has a projection system and has computer systems and Internet connectivity.

IT facility: MDI has a computer centre comprising 698 PC nodes. It also has two computer labs with 140 computers. There is also a Data Centre with a 10 IBM Pentium-based servers, connected with high speed Ethernet fibre optic network. They also have a firewall, E-mail system, high speed Internet connectivity and Wi-Fi facility at various parts of the campus. The auditorium has a video conferencing facility for global and student seminars and placement interviews.

Library: The MDI library has an impressive collection of more than 60,000 books. It also has electronic resources such as e-books, audio-visual material, electronic databases, CDs, DVDs, e-journals, e-reports, video conferencing facilities and training manuals. 

Hostels: Students of PGPM, PGP-HR and PGP-IM can stay on campus in the hostels, on twin-sharing basis. Twin-sharing accommodation is available in Change Masters, Odyssey and Takshashila buildings while Kaveri has twin- and triple-sharing and Kshitij has twin- and four-sharing accommodation. Each room is partly furnished; students are expected to bring their mattress, bed linen, toiletries and almirah locks. 

Executive Hostels: Executives participating in the Management Development Programmes are given accommodation in Parthenon and Nalanda hostels, specially designed for them. The rooms here are air-conditioned and fully furnished with modern conveniences, including Internet connection. However, they have bring their own laptops and LAN cards. 

Recreational facilities: Students can unwind at the golf course, or play badminton, billiards, table tennis or lawn tennis. There's also a gym to work out in and a recreation room, TV lounge and canteen where students usually hang out. Fitness freaks can also participate in the yoga classes conducted here. They can also use other facilities such as STD/ISD phone facilities, fax, e-mail, Internet and medical aid. 

Quality of faculty team: The excellent faculty of this institute provide students with the necessary knowledge and motivation to do well in academics and extra-curricular activities. Further, several faculty members are visiting academics for corporate houses, which brings in a gust of fresh air every now and then. 

Students are exposed to trends and expectations of corporates, which prepares them for working life. Industry leaders also visit the institute and interact with students and discuss burning issues in industry, which keeps students interested and in tune with what's happening out there. 

Tie-ups with other foreign institutions: MDI has tie-ups with 56 universities in different parts of the world. There are several exchange programmes here, under which about 150 students go abroad. Over the years, this number has increased, making the MDI's exchange program the largest in India. What began as a student exchange program has grown into an array of academic exchanges that include faculty, research scholars and students going to different countries for exposure in their niche areas. 

Placement facility provided: MDI believes that students are best led by corporate leaders and their invaluable experiences. The Business Thought Leadership Series, therefore, has been especially designed as an exchange forum of intellectually stimulating ideas between corporate leaders and future managers, each speaking to the audience. Through the mind and eye of these leaders, students get a ringside view of theoretical concepts learnt in the classroom and fresh insights to them by industry heads. 

The Synapse series, a series of workshops, live projects and corporate forums also prepare students for corporate life. Mental stimulation is also given to students in the form of games, domain-specific training and experiential exercises. Besides, Delphique, MDI's flagship research body is a meeting ground for students to interact with industry. It is the students' knowledge partner regarding industry trends. All these efforts give students an edge in the annual placement drive where the best of industry come to offer jobs to bright young management students.
