Part-I

Section 1: Verbal and Logical Ability

The Verbal and Logical Ability section was a mixed bag of easy, moderately easy/difficult and difficult questions. The Vocab-based questions were not challenging, RC passages were not difficult to follow, but the RC questions were largely based on critical thinking apart from the exclusive Critical Reasoning questions.

The breakup of the topics is as below:

Topic No. of Questions
RC based on Mood disorder & Creativity 3
RC based on Art & how it is perceived by common people 3
RC based on Women’s speech and perceptions on the same 3
RC based on ‘Elevation’ of the human mind 3
Poetry-based Comprehension (Crossing the Water by Sylvia Plath) 2
Logical Ability 1
CR 4
Para Formation (5 sentences) 2
Antonym (context-based) 1
Analogy 1
FIB (4 blanks) 1
Cloze passage (3 blanks) 1
Cloze passage (4 blanks) 1
Total 26

The RC based on Mood disorder and Creativity had questions testing critical thinking skills. Questions asked include: ‘what would undermine…’, ‘all options can be inferred except’, ‘which choice would make the author’s contention fallacious’.

The RC based on Art and how… had questions which were relatively easier. Questions were: ‘how would the author react to a young man walking into an art exhibition and commenting that it didn’t make much sense to him…’, ‘prerequisite to appreciate art’, and about identifying the mood of the author on a statement from the passage.

The RC based on Women’s speech…eloquence had questions which were equally challenging with external/hypothetical scenarios that needed to be understood from the context of the entire passage.

The RC based on ‘Elevation…’ had questions which were fairly direct when compared to the other RCs.

The poem-based questions were challenging which tested one’s understanding of specific parts of the poem.

Since the questions following the RC passages were challenging because they were followed by very close options, the right thing to do would have been to attempt only 6 or 7 carefully selected questions.

Of the four Critical Reasoning questions, two could surely be attempted without going wrong.

Of the two Para Formation questions, one was easy (the answer options could be used to arrive at the right order) while the other had lengthy sentences and it was relatively challenging to spot the logical connections between the sentences. One of the two should have been surely attempted without going wrong.

The Vocab-based questions – one each of antonym (context based) and analogy were easy.

Both the Cloze passages could be attempted with the help of the thought flow of the context itself without going wrong.

The Logic-based question did not give any context and had five different situations as answer options from which the student had to choose the 'least fallacious' one. It was an easy level question.

The cut-off is expected to be between 7 and 8 marks.
