NLU Delhi conducted AILET on May 6th, 2018. The test had five sections with a total of 150 questions. The test was conducted in paper-based mode and the duration was 90 minutes. Each question carried one mark and there was a negative of 0.25 for every incorrect answer.
The test, however, lived upto its usual reputation of throwing surprises as it was a little trickier this year also. As a result, the cut-off of the test is expected to be on a lower side. Let us have a brief analysis on each of the sections.
English
One of the major surprising elements this year was that the RCs and the Para Jumbles were completely missing and the emphasis was on Grammar. The questions were primarily based on Figures of Speech, Identifying sentences with correct punctuation, commonly confused words, etc. Because of the very nature of the questions, the section was a little time consuming and difficult to handle.
General Knowledge
The majority of the questions asked in this section were based on Current Affairs. However, as many as 20+ questions were direct and easy to answer. The questions were asked from International news, Polity, Science & Technology, Sports, etc Students who have been keeping themselves updated with the current happenings, would have found this section to be relatively an easier one. Apart from this, the questions on static GK were primarily based on miscelleneous topics.
Legal Aptitude
This section had questions on legal reasoning and legal knowledge. The questions on Assertion-Reasoning were missing. However, about 25 questions were based on Principles & Facts. Many questions not only had lengthy facts but were also presented in a complicated way, which made them diffiicult to comprehend. The questions on legal reasoning were difficult and time consuming. To arrive at the correct answer, one had to really think through and look at the problems from various perspectives.
Majority of the questions were from torts and contracts, few from criminal law, and none from Legal Maxims.
Most of the students would have found this section a difficult one to handle.
Reasoning
Though, this section had familiar kind of questions from the topics like Circular Arrangement, Matrix Arrangement, Series, Verbal Reasoning (e.g., deductive reasoning, statement-conclusion, etc.), however the nature of the questions made this section a lengthy one and time consuming. Many a student would have taken a lot of time in comprehending the question to arrive at the right answer. This made this section moderately tough and difficult to handle.
Mathematics
Among all the sections, the one that would have given respite to the students was this particular section. The section predominantly had the questions from topics like Time & Work, Time & Distance, Averages, SI-CI, Ratio & Proportion, Profit & Loss, etc and were really easy in nature. One could have easily attempted 7-9 questions in this section.
All in all, owing to the difficulty level and a relatively lengthier paper, the cut off should be lower as compared to the last year’s. It is expected to be around (82 +/- 3) this year.
