Options of Doing MS Programmes abroad with GATE Score

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of the most popular post graduate engineering examinations held in India for students aspiring to pursue their Masters in Engineering (M.E.) or Masters in Technology (M.Tech).

Before talking about foreign universities that accept GATE scores, let’s first understand what the GATE examination is all about.

The GATE examination is conducted once a year, usually around end January or in early February. The applications for same open in the October in the previous year.

The examination is a technical test that checks your proficiency in engineering subjects that you studied for in the last four years. There are 23 papers covering all major engineering subject areas that are tested. The exam consists of two types of questions. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical questions. Both these questions carry 1 to 2 marks per question and there is negative marking for MCQs.

While the GATE scores are widely accepted by major universities in India, such as IITs, IISc, NIT’s etc. now, a few, but famous foreign universities primarily in Singapore and Germany accept the GATE scores to admit students for their post graduate engineering courses. Given below are a list of foreign universities accept GATE score outside India.

Singapore

National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU) accept GATE scores for admissions to their PG programs.

These two universities offer world class research facilities and some of the programs at NUS and NTU are extremely competitive and comparable to the best in the world. According to the QS World university ranking, both NUS and NTU fall among the top 20 universities in the world.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

GATE scores are accepted by NTU for their Masters in Engineering and PhD programmes. For example, The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) accepts international students with a GATE score of at least 90%. However, please do note that your GATE score should not be more than 3 years old while applying.

Eligibility: NTU looks at least 90 percentile or above in GATE along with a good academic track record in your undergraduate engineering course.

Admission Date: Make sure to check when the admissions to these programs open and when the last date for submission of application is. The admissions dates to these universities are usually not synchronized to the GATE exam.

National University of Singapore (NUS)

NUS accepts GATE scores for their M.Sc. and PhD programs. Programs covered under the Faculty of Engineering accept GATE scores.

Eligibility: NUS looks for a good percentage in your undergraduate engineering course and at least 90 percentile or above in GATE.

Germany

As in Singapore, two prestigious universities in Germany also accept GATE scores. They are the Technical University of Munich (TU Munich) and RWTH ACHEN. Both these universities accept the GATE scores for their post graduate programmes.

TU Munich

TU Munich is a well reputed research university present in Munich, Garching and Freising-Weihenstephan. This university has produced several Nobel laureates, Leibniz Prize winners and many of its alumni are IEEE Fellow Members.

Eligibility: For some of their masters programs, candidates are short listed after a round of technical interview. They prefer students with GATE scores of at least 90 percentile or more.

Please note: the eligibility requirements for specific programs may vary between programs. Make sure that you check all details before applying.

RWTH Aachen

RWTH Aachen is a part of the IDEA league. It also partners with various reputed colleges such as the Imperial College London, TU Delft, ETH Zürich, and Paris Tech universities (IDEA league) to delivery state of the art learning.

RWTH’s Master's degree programs provide students with an excellent opportunity to acquire the necessary skills needed to enter into some of the most dynamic fields in engineering.

What’s more, some of these of these programs are taught in English language.

Eligibility: Students can apply for any of the above mentioned programs by using a valid GATE score.
