"Yoga Karmasu Kaushalam" meaning
perfection in action is yoga ,as the motto or guiding principle of the IIT
Kharagpur, rightly explains the essence of IIT KGP as it is popularly known.
IIT Kharagpur, the first of IITs established after independence, is regarded as
one of the best engineering institutes in India and is officially recognised by
the government of India as an institute of national importance. Located at West
Bengal within a sprawling campus of 2,100 acres and a self contained township
with over 15,000 inhabitants, KGP is easily the largest of IITs in terms of
size and student enrolments. Its location at the Hilji detention camp where
many freedom fighters have lost their lives fighting for the independence of
our country is unique since no other country in the world has its premier
educational institution in the site of an old prison camp.
The Rural Development Council (RDC) which was established to help rural people
and local community is one of the features of KGP. RDC coordinates the
community service activities, National Service Scheme activities etc. It has
also developed customized technologies for the local community. The KGP campus
does not restrict entry of outsiders and passes on the benefits to the local
people in and around the campus its amenities like hospital, nationalised
banks, railway reservation counter, water pumping station, police station,
market, restaurant, garbage disposal centre etc.

Vinod Gupta School of Management- the first management school in IIT system and
newly conceived Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law are also in
the KGP campus.
The central library in IIT Kharagpur has over 350,000 books and documents, and
subscriptions of more than 1,600 printed and online journals making it the
biggest technical library in Asia. The research projects earned by the
institute are a major source of revenue and it has a separate cell called
Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) to handle the projects and
industrial assignments. The festival organised by KGP known as Kshitij is the
biggest techno-management festival of Asia with a total budget of around Rupees
50 lakh. The alumni of IIT Kharagpur have come out with flying colours in
various fields. Kirit Parikh , Arun Sarin , Arjun Malhotra and Vinod Gupta –
all KGPians, are some of the prominent names in the world today.
