To help you understand this year's test paper better, we bring you a comprehensive analysis of NIMCET 2013

MATHEMATICS

The questions in this section were slightly difficult when compared to those given in NIMCET 2012. This section had 50 questions. About 30% of the questions were easy and direct. As the paper had negative marking, there was no need to attempt the difficult questions. There were no new question types asked in this exam.

Overall, this section was easy. In order to maximise the score in this section, the best strategy to answer this section would have been to identity the easy ones and solve them first. Care should have been taken in moving ahead without spending too much time on difficult questions. The time allotted for this section should not have exceeded 40 minutes.

The distribution of questions from each topic, along with the difficulty level is given in the table below.

ANALYTICAL ABILITY AND LOGICAL REASONING

Of the 40 questions in this section, 4 were from Arithmetic topics and the rest were on reasoning. Every year there are a few questions from Arithmetic in this section. The questions in this section were easy to moderate difficulty level. As compared to NIMCET-2012 this year difficulty level of this section is slightly on the lower side.

The distribution of questions from each topic, along with the difficulty level is given in the table below.

COMPUTER AWARENESS

This section had 10 questions on computers. The questions were based on Number Representation, Minimization and Logic functions.

There were six questions on Digital Logic. Four out of these were easy and two were of moderate difficulty level.
There were three questions based on memory concepts of computers. All these three questions were a test of the basic concepts of memory (speed, accessibility, etc,) of the storage devices.
The remaining one question was based on Internet.

Overall an average student will be able to answer 7 -8 questions out of 10 questions.

ENGLISH

This year's English part was unusually difficult, though not very difficult. A number of questions on idioms, some of them as rare as 'a dog's breakfast'; a couple of tricky questions like the one on use of correct article before MA and a good many questions on tenses took the level to moderate difficulty. However, the all vocab questions and the general usage questions were the saving grace, making the paper quite doable.

There were in all 20 questions of which 10 were on grammar and 10 on vocabulary. Of the 10 grammar questions, 4 were difficult while the others were comparatively easier. Most of the grammar questions were on tense-related concepts; there were two on prepositions and one on indirect speech. There was also 1 sentence-jumble question.

Of the 10 vocab questions, 4, especially the ones dealing with idioms and phrases were difficult. The others were doable. There were 3 questions on idioms, 1 on analogy, 1 on synonym and 1 on antonym. The break-up of the questions is as follows:

Grammar based questions: 10
Vocab based FIB questions: 3
Synonym/antonym questions: 2
Idioms/phrases: 4
Analogy: 1

Note: There were no Reading Comprehension, Cloze, paragraph jumble questions this year too. A well-prepared student is likely to attempt at least 17 questions and is likely to get about 14 correct.

Thus, a score of 14 is a reasonably good performance.

To summarise, when compared with the NIMCET2012 paper, this year the Maths section was slightly difficult and questions on reasoning and computers were relatively easier. The English part was of moderate difficulty. Over all the paper was relatively easier when compared to NIMCET2011 paper.
